PROVIDING SUPPORT

 PROVIDING SUPPORT IN A FACILITY SETTING: This clinical practicum rotation incorporates 196 hours of placement experience (including 6 hours of simulation participation) which can occur in a hospital, rehabilitation center or long term care setting. This course builds on the previously developed outcomes from semester one and continues to prepare students for the Personal Support Worker scope of practice following the MTCU standards. The course introduces students to the application of theories, practice skills and principles of therapeutic communication while providing care to individuals in the facility based setting. Students will assist in the promotion and maintenance of a safe and comfortable environment for the client, their families, self and others. In addition, students will practice the fundamental psychomotor skills and interventions to provide consistent, safe, competent and effective client-centered care to all clients in the clinical setting. The student will move towards independence in their practice.

PROVIDING SUPPORT IN A COMMUNITY SETTING: The purpose of the community practicum is to prepare the student to function under the supervision of the community agency staff in a community setting, to assist clients of varying ages to meet their basic emotional, social and physical needs. The focus for the 6 day practicum is to assist the clients in their daily activities by promoting self-acceptance, self-esteem, dignity and by providing opportunities for activation. The practicum takes place in a variety of community settings which may include the client’s home. The student should demonstrate the ability to provide safe and competent care to minimum of 2 clients independently in Care Students are to apply their theoretical knowledge and skills with increasing independence to design, implement and evaluation their role in providing preventive, supportive and restorative care for individuals and/or families in both structured and unstructured settings.
